Digital Literacy and Citizenship

After having 100% of parents on board to get Google Apps for Education (GAFE) accounts, I have submitted our class roster and await impatiently for access to this wonderful tool for learning.

In the meantime, we will be delving into our digital citizenship program (DCP). What is DCP? DCP is a program designed to empower students to think critically, behave safely, and participate responsibly in our digital world.

Using blended lessons of classroom learning and hands on (technology device) learning, students will embark on ideas and concepts of digital literacy. Topics will include: private and personal information, effective keyword searches, the power of words, copyrighted material and plagiarism, secure and age appropriate websites. Information and family ‘tip’ sheets will be sent home with each lesson.

Students will have access to “Digital Passportâ„¢” an award-winning web-based game aimed at students in grades 3-5 who must learn critical skills around being safe, smart and responsible online. They will have an opportunity to make a video based on the song below and enter a contest from Common Sense Media to have their video selected and posted on the educational website (pending parental consent) as well as a LBPSB DCP contest.

I invite you to peruse the following websites for excellent resources dealing with online safety ad responsibility.

    Miss Daphne,

We are blessed to have you teaching our kids. The tools you are using are powerful and creative. I was delighted watching the ‘pause and think about it’ video. I also love the ‘shapes songs’ lyrics – so much fun! Digital citizenship is critical, and we are so pleased you are tackling that, too. And of course, Reflex math is simply genius. I can’t wait for google apps for education!

Your program is challenging, interesting, and full of heart.

Thank you for giving us parents homework. It keeps us learning alongside our kids – invaluable 🙂
